FAQs

What is a dedicated server or dedicated hosting?

As opposed to Shared web hosting or Virtual Private Servers, a Dedicated Servers resources are all allocated to the one customer.
That is; the server processing power, available memory, and storage capacity is entirely dedicated to service a single customer’s
online services. Not only that, but a dedicated server gives you complete administrator’s access to configure those services exactly
as you need to, allowing you to also deploy any additional server software needed in support of those services.

When should I make the decision to upgrade to a server?

You should move to an our dedicated server when you want to run services or applications that demand higher performance,
greater security, or need the flexibility of system administrator access to manage successfully. Also, if your current monthly
data transfer or storage requirement out grows your shared or virtual packages, you will need to move to a dedicated server
solution.

Are your dedicated servers reliable?

Unlike other providers, all our servers are quality-branded, benchmark tested machines. We have an excellent server
reliability record. If you do have a hardware problem, we will fix or replace the server at no extra cost to you.

I see Plesk comes with my package as standard - do I have to use it?

We try to make things easy for you, Plesk is an industry standard control panel which make administering your
Dedicated Server easy!. However should you choose not to use Plesk, we allow you to specify this during our
sign up procedure.

What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security technology that is commonly used for encrypting communications between
users and e-commerce websites, thereby securing server to browser transactions. The SSL protocol utilizes encryption
to prevent eavesdropping and tampering of the transmitted data, and is used to secure information passed by a
browser (such as a customer's credit card number or password) to a webserver (such as an online store). SSL protects
data submitted over the Internet from being intercepted and viewed by unintended recipients and as used by hundreds
of thousands of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers, SSL is the de-facto industry
standard Internet transaction security technology.

How is a SSL certificate installed onto a webserver?

When SSL is first activated on the webserver, the webserver requires information about the identity of the website
including the website domain name and company details.

The webserver then creates two cryptographic keys - a Private Key and a Public Key. The Private Key is so called
for a reason - this key must remain private and secure, only residing on the webserver. The Public Key does not
need to be secret and is placed into a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) - a data file which also contains all the
website credentials.
The Private and Public keys are used in the encryption process, so that the data passing between the webserver
(website) and the customer's browser remains confidential and secure.
The CSR generated is submitted to Certification Authorities during the Easyspace SSL Certificate application
process. The Certification Authority then validates the website credentials and issues an SSL Certificate containing
the digital identity of the website, binding the domain name to the company details. The webserver will match the
issued SSL Certificate to the associated Private Key and allows the webserver to establish encrypted links between
the website and customer's browsers.

What is RAID?

RAID refers to a data storage system which uses multiple hard disks to share or replicate data among the drives.
Depending on the RAID configuration, the benefits of RAID is to increase data integrity, fault tolerance, and speed,
compared with a single drive. Therefore 2 x 80GB Hard Disks in RAID 1 means that your data is mirrored on both
hard disks such that if one disk fails, the other continues service. RAID 5 or higher configurations

What's the minimum contract?

We don’t tie you in to a minimum contract – when we say no hidden costs, we mean it.

How quickly can I get this set up?

All our dedicated servers are ready to go when you are, so we normally have the server setup on the same day as
the order. If not, due to unforeseen circumstances, we will certainly have you live within 24 hours.

What does unlimited bandwidth mean?

Our unlimited bandwidth offer allows you to transfer as much data as you like, via our 100Mb/s ports, and not expect
to receive a bill.

Can I choose my own specification of server?

Yes. If you need higher processing power, more memory, larger storage etc, then please contact us to discuss your
requirements. We can provide and host the exact server, or servers, you need.

Can I upgrade my server at any time?

Yes. If you need to upgrade your server platform just contact us for assistance. Either we can provide a more powerful
server or open your existing server (will incur downtime)
to add more memory or larger disks etc.

We also offer a migration service starting at £100 - this will ensure that your move is done carefully and where possible,
without any downtime to your service.

How will I know my server is down?

Get an Advanced Monitoring package and you will not only be alerted 24/7 to any server down-time but also alerted to
any services or ports which are unavailable.

Can I backup my data?

Our all inclusive packages come with 5GB data storage.

Will my server be secure?

Yes. All servers are placed in our very own Data Centre and behind our Cisco Enterprise Security Devices.

I'm not an experienced server administrator. can you help manage the server for me?

Yes. Whatever you need managed on your behalf, we can help. However, our Dedicated server packages come complete
with Plesk, an industry standard control panel.

I'm already hosting my services with another provider but want to move to you?

Great! Let us set your server up and then you can simply duplicate the services on your new dedicated server. Once set up,
you only need to make a simple DNS change to the affected domains to complete the process.

Can I get more IP Addresses?

Yes but allocation of additional IP Addresses is regulated in accordance with RIPE guidelines. It is not necessary or beneficial
to have a single IP Address per website but SSL Certificates will require a unique IP Address per site.

What happens if I break the server?

It happens, but don’t panic. Either we set things straight for a fee or you were smart and purchased our Server Hands Upgrade
to ensure you were covered for little emergencies like these!
